Biodiversity conservation

"Nothing in ecology makes sence excepting in the light of conservation"

(the original phrase of T. Dobzhansky was this: "Nothing in biology makes sence excepting in the light of evolution")

I grow up and currently live in the Saxon area. Since I was a kid I spent much more time in nature than between humans (the last one being restricted only to my school activities), with fishing (with my father), observing animals (with my father) and not at the least, working with my grandparents, who made traditional farming in a small village called Pipe.

Now I am in that lucky situation to effectively do something for the conservation of these landscapes:

I was member in the “Agenda 21” program, where briefly summarized the current knowledge about the biodiversity of Sighişoara and its surroundings (2004), emphasizing those areas with high species richness and habitat diversities.

Together with Cosmin Moga, we conducted field research and proposed two Natural Parks along the Târnava Mare Valley region: Laslea Natural Park, Buneşti Natural Park (both accepted by Romanian Academy) (2005), in collaboration with the Mihai Eminescu Trust.

We proposed of a Special Protected Area, Brădeni fishponds and a Natural Reserve, the “Breite Plateau” (both accepted by R.A.), in collaboration with the Declining Amphibian Populations Task Force (DAPTF)  (2004) and the Mihai Eminescu Trust (2005).

Moreover, we conducted field research for establishment of a Natura 2000 reserve along the Târnava Mare Valley (in collaboration with the Mihai Eminescu Trust, EPA – Târgu Mureş and Focus Eco Center, Cluj Napoca).

I am member of the management team of the Breite woodpasture Reserve, having the responsibility the monitoring and restoration of the wetlands and the monitoring of the amphibian populations.

We have recently submitted a paper in which we propose a management plan for amphibians in the Tarnava Mare basin, based on their biological and ecological needs:

Hartel, T., K. Öllerer, Sz. Nemes. Critical elements for biologically based management plans for amphibians in the middle section of the Târnava Mare basin. Múzeumi Füzetek, in press.
